Information graphics or “infographics” are a graphical, visual representation of information, data or knowledge intended to easily present simple to complex information quickly and clearly using a combination of images and text.  Infographics can improve retention and understanding by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends.  The process of creating infographics can be referred to as data visualization, information design, or information architecture.

Infographics are not a recent invention and have been used in the media for many years.  Examples are weather forecast images, maps, site plans, graphing and statistical illustration.  Many common magazines and newspapers use infographics frequently to quickly convey news, current events, etc.
